How To Never Be Late Again

A long time ago someone told me there are exactly two non-negotiable principles that must be adhered to if you expect to succeed in business.

  1. Always be on time
  2. Do what you say you will do

It sounds almost too simple, doesn’t it?  But every time I’ve had a business relationship with a client where I did not violate either of these two principles, in even the smallest way, the relationship  had a solid foundation for success.  And if the business case was there, success did indeed follow.  There still had to be a need or problem that I could address and my output still had to be very high quality.  Those things are a given.  But at least I never had to worry about my client’s lack of confidence in my ability to deliver on time.

Let’s talk about principle number one.  Always be on time.

Did you know that when you show up late for an appointment, you’re communicating one of two things to the other person(s).  You’re giving them the impression that they, and their time and the matter for which you agreed to meet in the first place, are not very important to you.  Or you might be causing them to think that you’re incompetent.

The bottom line is that no one likes to be kept waiting and the problem of being late is very easy to fix.

The first thing you must do is use a calendar and put all of your commitments in there.  If you promise Joseph that you will meet him at Starbucks at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, you should have that exact commitment recorded in your calendar.

Now for a insanely simple little technique that will prevent you from ever being late again.  In the “where” field of your appointment, place the address of where you will meet.  This serves a couple of purposes.

It makes sure you know exactly where the location is, which as simple as it might sound, is the first step to eliminate tardiness.  And if you use Google Calendar, or similar, you can click on the word “map” beside the address and you’re presented with a map that has your destination marked.

Once the map is open, click on directions and either choose your current location, or type in the address of where you will be leaving from for your appointment.  Now you have a fairly reliable estimate of how long it will take you to travel to your meeting.

Here comes the important part.  Add 10 minutes to the time estimate on the map and back up the total time (travel time plus 10 minutes) and place a reminder for when to leave on your calendar.  Did you know that the excuse most people give for being late is traffic?  The typical traffic delay is less than 10 minutes, so with this technique the traffic issue goes away.  And if you don’t encounter any travel delays, and arrive 10 minutes early, simply pull out your mobile device and return a few emails or check in on Foursquare.  And, of course, you can be all relaxed and on top of your game because you’re on time. :-)

BONUS: If you’re using an Android mobile device, you can pull up the appointment, click on the address link and have Google Maps for Android give you turn-by-turn directions to your destination.

Make this a habit and you will no longer have to worry about this silly issue of being late.  Now you can focus all your energy on number two.  Doing what you say you will do.  Do high quality work that is delivered on time and you will be way ahead of many of your competitors.

Fix for Google+ Apps for iOS and Android Coming in a Few Days

I was so excited to finally get to sign up for Google+ for my Google Apps account yesterday.  Then, of course, I downloaded the Android app right away and unfortunately a little of the excitement went away.

When I tried to login I got the following:

“The server has returned an error.  There was a problem communicating with the server.”

It looks like the web is full of Apps users with the same issue.  Apparently Google rolled out G+ availability to Google Apps accounts before updating either the Android or iOS apps to support it.

But the good news is… Google acknowledges the issue and there’s a fix coming a few days.  Apparently in the form of an app update to allow Google Apps users to login.  Here’s a G+ post from Google’s Ronald Ho.

So do like me.  Keep checking for the update about every 30 minutes and it’ll be here before you know it!

The Perfect Way to Make a Highly Personalized Impression for $0.99

Small businesses should always be looking for ways to touch their clients.  The more positive impressions you can make, the better for the relationship.  The trouble is most of us are running way too fast to take time to think about a systematic way to make these touches.  And if we do find a “system” to help with human touch points, many times it feels like a system to the recipient, our clients.  You know, the tired old postcard or form letter that says the same thing no matter the situation.

I recently found an app for my Android phone (also available for iPhone) that allows me to respond to opportunities to touch my clients as they present themselves.  Allow me to introduce you to Postagram.

postagram start screenThis free app lets me take any photo from my phone and send it as a personalized postcard.  Simple.  Meaningful.  Thoughtful.  And inexpensive at $0.99 each.

When you open the app a splash screen appears that reminds you how Postagram works.  Just click the Create a Postagram button at the botton of the screen to get started.

postagram select photoThe next screen loads all the photos from your phone as thumbnails and allows you to select the one you want for your Postagram.  There’s even an option to select a photo from your Facebook account.  Or, you can take a photo right then and there with the camera button in the top right of the screen.

Once you have the photo selected, you’re taken into a simple editor that allows you to move and crop the photo.  When you’re done just click save.

postagram personalize messageThe next screens allow you to personalize your Postagram.  You can choose an avatar to go in the return address area.  This could be a photo of you or an image of your company logo that has been saved to your phone.  Avatars are saved in Postagram so that the selection process is a single click the next time.

The second personalization screen lets you enter a message for your Postagram.  The recipient of this postcard is going to be really impressed with how the content relates to the photo and them.  Once everything is just like you want it, click continue.

postagram select addressThe final editing screen provides a simple interface where you can select the recipient’s address from your contacts, or you can type in a new address. As new addresses are used the app remembers them for future Postagrams.

The last screen shows you what your Postagram will look like and allows you to place your order.  After a few well thought out screens, very little typing, and a few clicks, your order is placed and a bill for a whopping $0.99 appears on your next credit card statement.  Your credit card info is also saved on the Postagram server so that future orders are a single click.

There you have it.  A  totally personalized touch for clients with almost zero hassle on your part.

Think of all the uses for this.  In my real estate business, I’m always taking photos of clients in front of their new home, or posing by their sold sign.  With Postagram,  when their purchase or sale is complete I can send them a reminder of a special moment.

There are great opportunities to build relationships in your personal life too.  How about a special moment on a vacation with family or friends?  Graduations?  Weddings?  The possibilities are endless.

If you’ve got an idea for a great way to use Postagram sound off in the comments below.
